Abstract

Song lyrics often convey meaning not only explicitly but also implicitly through pragmatic elements such as presupposition. The album “0.1 flaws and all” by Wave to Earth presents themes of imperfection, loneliness, and self reflection that are communicated through implicit meanings in the lyrics. This study aims to identify the types of presupposition found in selected songs from the album and to explain the implicature conveyed through them. This research applies a pragmatic approach using George Yule’s theory of presupposition and uses a descriptive qualitative method. The data consist of lyrics from four selected songs in the album, namely “Bad”, “Calla”, “Homesick”, and “Dried Flower”, which were collected from Genius.com and verified through Spotify. The analysis was conducted by identifying presupposition expressions, classifying the types of presupposition, and interpreting their meanings in the lyrics. The findings show that several types of presupposition appear in the lyrics, including existential, factive, non factive, lexical, structural, and counterfactual presuppositions. These presuppositions function as pragmatic devices that construct implicatures and express emotional experiences, personal reflection, and the theme of accepting human imperfections in the songs.
